  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and water in a bowl; sprinkle yeast over it and let sit until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Add the yeast mixture along with softened butter, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla; combine into a soft dough.
  3. Knead dough until smooth (about 8-10 minutes). Place in a greased bowl to rise until doubled in size (~1 hour).
  4. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle (~¼ inch thick) and spread filling evenly.
  6. Roll tightly from one long side; cut into rolls (~1-2 inches thick) and place in a greased baking dish.
  7. Allow rolls to rise again (~30 minutes) until puffy.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. While cooling slightly, whip together cream cheese frosting ingredients until smooth; spread over warm rolls.
