  • ½ cup chicken broth

  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) unsalted butter (melted)
  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons garlic (minced)
  • ¼ cup (31 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried mustard
  • 4 cups (32 ounces) vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, melt ¼ cup of unsalted butter over medium heat and sauté diced yellow onions and minced garlic until translucent.
  3. In a large bowl, mix thawed hash browns, sautéed onions, shredded cheese, sour cream, flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, dried mustard, chicken broth, and milk until well combined.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  5. In another skillet, heat vegetable oil and fry thinly sliced onions until golden brown and crispy; sprinkle with salt.
  6. Top the potato mixture with crispy onions and bake for about 50 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
